Exciting New Campsite and Campervan Area Set to Launch in South Tenerife

Tenerife is on the verge of unveiling a new official campsite and campervan area in the southern part of the island. This development will take place at the site of the former El Pinalito bottled water factory in Vilaflor, nestled within the stunning Corona Forestal Natural Park.

The Cabildo, the island’s governing body, has unanimously approved the initial phase of this ambitious project. The primary goal is to foster economic activities linked to the campsite’s operation. To facilitate this, a dedicated commission has been established to swiftly conduct a comprehensive study that will assess the legal, financial, and social implications of various management models for the campsite.

Revitalizing a Historical Industrial Site

The El Pinalito factory, which ceased operations in 2004, has been a dormant site since its closure. In the years that followed, the facilities were transferred to the Cabildo. With the approval of the Corona Forestal management plan in 2012, the area was earmarked for accommodation purposes, paving the way for camping and hostel facilities.

In 2025, the demolition of the old factory buildings began, with a contract valued at €453,000. This significant phase of the project was completed in February of this year, clearing the way for the new development. The entire plot encompasses 7,020 square meters, with 2,836 square meters previously occupied by the factory structures, now ready to be transformed into a vibrant campsite.

Innovative Features of the Planned Campsite

The proposed campsite is set to include 35 pitches specifically designed for tents and motorhomes. Essential amenities will be provided, including public toilets, a reception area, green spaces, a café, and designated wastewater disposal points for motorhomes. The developed area is anticipated to cover approximately 4,800 square meters, ensuring ample space for visitors to enjoy the natural surroundings.

In a move towards sustainability, plans also include the installation of a photovoltaic energy system. This innovative feature will allow the campsite to operate independently, providing a reliable electricity supply while harmonizing with the natural forest environment.

The Cabildo is currently exploring various operational models, with a public works concession emerging as the preferred option. This model would enable a specialized private company to manage the campsite directly, ensuring that it meets the needs of visitors while maintaining high standards of service. The aim is to kick off the tender process for the project in the latter half of this year, marking a significant step forward in bringing this vision to life.

Pedro Millán, Tenerife’s Island Director for the Natural Environment, has described this initiative as unprecedented. He emphasized that it will be the first instance of a campsite being developed in a wooded natural area adjacent to Teide National Park. This project is poised to offer British residents and visitors who enjoy campervan holidays a regulated alternative in one of Tenerife’s most picturesque locations, enhancing the island’s appeal as a travel destination.
