Major Investment by Metrotenerife to Enhance Train Access at Tenerife South Airport
In a significant move to improve transportation infrastructure, Metropolitano de Tenerife (Metrotenerife) has announced a planned investment of €1.6 million dedicated to redesigning train access at the Tenerife South Airport, scheduled for implementation in 2026. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance connectivity and support the anticipated growth of the airport.
Comprehensive Funding for Railway Projects
As detailed in the 2026 budget, Metrotenerife has allocated a total of €2,065,000 for the planning and development of two major railway projects across the island. This funding is primarily focused on the Southern Railway project, which is currently undergoing vital updates to improve its functionality and efficiency.
Transforming the Southern Railway Corridor
A significant portion of the funds will be directed towards modifying a crucial segment of the Southern Railway that runs adjacent to Tenerife South Airport. This reconfiguration is the result of collaborative discussions between the Cabildo and the airport operator, aimed at ensuring that the railway route aligns seamlessly with the airport’s planned expansion initiatives.
To support this redesign effort, the Cabildo is set to invest €1 million specifically for redefining the railway section near the airport. This investment will also facilitate the development of plans for a new interchange in the vicinity, which is essential for improving passenger access and overall operational efficiency. This segment is part of the initial phase of the railway line that will connect Las Chafiras to Costa Adeje, further enhancing the region’s transport network.
Strategic Infrastructure Development and Planning Initiatives
In addition to the modifications related to the airport, Metrotenerife is allocating €620,000 for an alternatives analysis and the foundational project aimed at establishing temporary workshops and depots located strategically between the Granadilla Industrial Estate and Costa Adeje. This investment is crucial for ensuring that the necessary facilities are in place to support ongoing railway operations and maintenance.
Moreover, an additional €200,000 has been earmarked for the technical and environmental documentation required to amend the Special Territorial Plan for the Southern Railway. These initiatives are being coordinated with Aena, the airport operator, to ensure that the train stop at Reina Sofía Airport is optimally positioned. This collaboration aims to balance the operational needs of the airport with the mobility strategies being developed by the Cabildo, ensuring a cohesive transport network.
Advancements in the Northern Railway Project
In parallel with the Southern Railway project, Metrotenerife is also making strides in the Northern Railway initiative. A budget of €245,000 has been allocated to engage consultancy services for an idea competition, which includes awarding prizes for sub-phase 2.2. This funding will also cover fees associated with Phase 3, which involves drafting a comprehensive feasibility study to assess the viability of the project.
Furthermore, the Project Department has set aside €720,000 to design and implement two new exits on tram line 1. One exit will be positioned above the La Paz stop, while the other will be located between the Science Museum and Cruz de Piedra. These enhancements are expected to significantly improve operational efficiency and increase the tram line’s capacity to manage incidents or operational maneuvers, thereby providing a more reliable service for commuters.
