La Laguna’s Neighbourhood Day: A Vibrant Celebration of Community Spirit This Sunday
This Sunday, the lively Plaza del Cristo in La Laguna is set to transform into a hub of activity as the community comes together to celebrate Neighbourhood Day. This annual event is not only a showcase of local culture and talent but also a testament to the strong bonds that unite the residents of La Laguna.
Fostering Community Connections
The event is spearheaded by the Citizen Participation Area of the La Laguna Town Council, with the goal of enhancing community ties and encouraging active involvement among residents. Fran Hernández, the Councilman for Citizen Participation and Municipal Services, highlighted the significance of acknowledging the efforts of local residents who contribute to the vibrancy of daily life in the municipality. He remarked that Neighbourhood Day serves as a vital platform to celebrate those who dedicate their time and energy to community activities, fostering a spirit of mutual support and collaboration.
Juan Luis Marín Carvajal, president of the Federation of Neighbourhood Associations “Aguere” (FAV Aguere), reinforced these sentiments, emphasizing that Neighbourhood Day is fundamentally about organized citizens and their proactive engagement in local matters. He noted that this event provides a unique opportunity for residents to come together, share their experiences, and work collectively towards a more unified La Laguna.
Exciting Activities and Attractions
Set to run from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, the festivities will offer a diverse array of activities tailored for families, children, and community organizations. Attendees will have the chance to explore 25 stalls that will feature local crafts, volunteer opportunities, and valuable information from various NGOs. A dedicated children’s area, a youth zone, and spaces for sports activities are also part of the lineup, ensuring that there is something for everyone to enjoy. Additionally, a traditional ‘gofio’ tent and a Canarian stall will be available, alongside a large communal tent furnished with tables and chairs for visitors to relax and socialize.
One of the highlights of the day will be the preparation of a Grand Popular Paella, which is expected to serve around 2,000 people. This culinary delight will include a vegan option, catering to the diverse dietary preferences of attendees and ensuring that everyone can partake in the communal feast.
A Day of Cultural Enrichment and Community Recognition
The cultural program promises to deliver a continuous stream of entertainment, seamlessly blending folklore, popular music, and theatrical performances. The festivities will kick off with a performance by the Folk Group Los Aceviños, followed by lively acts from Parranda Cuevas del Lino and the Achaman group. The Cultural Association Puroteatro will present a theatrical piece, while the comparsa Los Joroperos will take the stage afterward. A formal ceremony is scheduled for 1:30 PM, with the much-anticipated distribution of the popular paella commencing at 2:00 PM. As the day progresses, attendees can look forward to performances by renowned artists such as Pepe Benavente, Luis Deseda, Jhonny Maquinaria, and Grupo La Calle, culminating in a spectacular show by Los Vándalos.
In addition to the entertainment, several individuals and groups will be honored for their unwavering commitment to the community. Posthumous recognition will be awarded to Goya Dorta, a resident celebrated for her advocacy of the Anaga Rural Park, and María Candelaria Gil, a retired local police officer recognized for her significant contributions to the neighbourhood movement. The Chess Club Ébano Barrio Nuevo will also receive acknowledgment for its remarkable 35 years of dedicated service to the community.
To ensure that everyone can participate in the festivities, the Town Council will provide bus services from all six districts, making it easier for residents from various neighborhoods to join in the celebrations.
This year’s Neighbourhood Day is made possible through a collaborative effort involving multiple departments, including Citizen Participation, Local Development, Commerce, Youth, and Festivities, all supported by the Government of the Canary Islands, GMR Canarias, Radio ECCA, and Alcampo. This joint initiative aims to create a welcoming environment for interaction, coexistence, and celebration among the neighborhoods of La Laguna.
