Exciting Developments for the Northern Tenerife Carnival Contest
The upcoming Northern murgas contest in La Orotava is generating significant buzz as it prepares to welcome a diverse lineup of participants in February 2026. This event, which has faced challenges in recent years, is now witnessing a remarkable resurgence, with twelve critical groups confirming their participation. Among these, three groups are traveling from outside the region, including a notable entry from Gran Canaria.
Historic Participation from Tras Con Tras
Among the standout entrants is Tras Con Tras, a prominent female murga that holds the distinction of being the second oldest collective in the history of the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Celebrating its 31st anniversary this year, Tras Con Tras has registered for the Northern contest, benefiting from a recent agreement that allows participation in both the Northern and capital events. This dual opportunity marks a significant milestone for the group, as it aims to showcase its talents on a broader stage.
Under the leadership of Tati Rodríguez, with Melca Barrera as the oldest member, Tras Con Tras is preparing an impressive repertoire of four songs for the contest, although only three will be performed. The artistic director has indicated that there may be adjustments to the lyrics, which are crafted by Cristo Casas, who also serves as the musical director. This creative flexibility is expected to enhance their performance, allowing the group to resonate more deeply with the audience.
Gran Canaria’s Lengüetudos Joins the Fray
Representing Gran Canaria is Lengüetudos, hailing from Santa Lucía de Tirajana. Established in February 2016, this murga made its debut shortly thereafter at Santa Catalina park. Under the leadership of Aythami Santana, the group has made a strategic decision to take a break from competing in the capital to focus entirely on the Northern contest, thereby avoiding scheduling conflicts that could dilute their efforts.
However, Lengüetudos faces significant challenges, including a labor dispute that could hinder their participation due to the absence of percussionists. Despite these obstacles, the group remains optimistic about their chances. They have chosen to register for the Northern contest after deciding against competing in Las Palmas, primarily due to increased requirements that now mandate a minimum of 40 members—a target they find difficult to meet. This decision reflects their commitment to delivering a strong performance in La Orotava.
Strategic Choices and Preparations
In light of their circumstances, Lengüetudos has made a strategic decision to concentrate their efforts on the Northern contest, opting to rehearse three songs instead of splitting their focus between two events. With the registration period now closed, the group is dedicated to overcoming their labor issues to ensure a full lineup for their performance in La Orotava. This focused approach is expected to enhance their cohesion and overall performance quality.
A Glimpse at Lengüetudos’ Achievements
Lengüetudos has a commendable history, having won ten awards for Costume – Presentation in Tenerife, while securing only one in Gran Canaria. Their performances feature engaging lyrics crafted by Jesús and Mario, the latter being a member of Virgueritos in La Orotava. The group’s costumes, known for their creativity and vibrancy, are designed by Román López, adding a visual spectacle to their performances that captivates audiences.

In addition to Tras Con Tras and Lengüetudos, the Northern murgas contest will feature a variety of other groups, each bringing their unique flair and creativity to the event.
