Vital Emergency Preparedness Kits Rolled Out in Tenerife as Volcanic Drill Approaches

The emergency backpack, as outlined by Rosa Dávila, the President of the Cabildo of Tenerife, is designed to provide critical support during emergencies. The contents of the backpack include a radio for communication, batteries to power devices, a torch for visibility, a notepad and pen for taking notes or leaving messages, a thermal blanket for warmth, a hygiene kit for personal care, a document holder for important papers, and a wallet for cash. Dávila stressed the importance of each household in Tenerife having this backpack readily available, underscoring its role as a vital resource in times of crisis.

Community Engagement and Distribution Initiatives

The Red Cross played a pivotal role in the distribution of these emergency backpacks, with a total of 73 bags being handed out to residents in the Villa and Puerto areas. Each household received one backpack, ensuring that families are prepared for potential emergencies. The distribution event, which took place at the historic former Convent of San Francisco, attracted around 70 attendees from various sectors of the community, highlighting the collective effort to bolster safety and preparedness.

In addition to the initial distribution, Dávila announced plans to extend this initiative to five more municipalities in Tenerife that are deemed to be at a higher risk of volcanic activity. Residents of La Orotava, El Tanque, Guía de Isora, Icod de los Vinos, and Santiago del Teide will also benefit from receiving these essential emergency kits, further enhancing the region’s overall preparedness.

As part of the lead-up to the volcanic drill, which is scheduled to culminate on September 26, approximately 200 residents from the old dock area will engage in a simulated evacuation exercise. Local residents, including Loli Velázquez and her neighbors, expressed a calm demeanor regarding the upcoming drill. They indicated that they would await instructions and felt reassured by the information provided by local authorities, demonstrating a community that is taking the situation seriously while remaining composed.

Mixed Reactions from the Community

While many residents maintain a calm outlook, there are underlying concerns regarding the potential for volcanic activity. Some community members have voiced their anxiety, particularly in light of recent seismic swarms and circulating rumors about a possible eruption. Dulce González Illada and Nieves González, residents from the Genovés neighborhood, shared their observations of the community’s varied responses. They noted that while some individuals are understandably worried, others seem indifferent to the situation. “What will happen, will happen. We will see what we do,” they remarked, reflecting a sense of resignation amid the uncertainty surrounding volcanic activity.

Following the distribution of the backpacks, a demonstration was conducted to educate residents on the contents of the kits and how to use them effectively. This educational component is crucial, as the Cabildo aims to foster a culture of preventive preparedness among families.
