AEMET Issues Wind Warning for Tenerife with Gusts Over 90 km/h

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a warning for unsettled weather across the Canary Islands this Tuesday, particularly highlighting the potential for very strong winds in the central peaks of Tenerife. Forecasts indicate that gusts could exceed 90 km/h, prompting concerns for safety in exposed areas.

Weather Conditions Across the Islands

In general, temperatures across the archipelago are expected to remain steady, while varying cloud cover and light rain are anticipated in certain regions. The winds will begin the day light, originating from the west or southwest, but are projected to strengthen significantly by the afternoon. This shift will lead to rougher seas and a north swell of 1 to 2 metres affecting the entire archipelago, which may pose challenges for maritime activities.

Tenerife Weather Forecast

Tenerife’s weather will feature a mix of low and high cloud throughout the day, with conditions becoming cloudier in the eastern and southern parts of the island during the afternoon. Light rain is a possibility in these areas later on, particularly as the day progresses. At higher elevations, especially around Teide National Park and Izaña, strong westerly winds are expected to reach very strong gusts of over 90 km/h. These conditions will create hazardous situations for hikers and drivers in exposed areas, necessitating caution for those planning to venture outdoors.

Temperatures in Tenerife will remain mild in coastal zones, with a minimum of 22°C and a maximum of 28°C. However, a noticeable drop in temperatures is anticipated in the mountainous regions, where conditions can change rapidly and unexpectedly.

Forecast for Other Islands

Gran Canaria will experience partly cloudy skies, with an increase in high cloud cover throughout the morning. From midday onwards, more cloud is expected to build over the northern and eastern slopes, where light, occasional rain cannot be ruled out. Winds at the summit will strengthen from the west and could become very strong in exposed areas, while coastal regions will experience moderate breezes. Temperatures will remain stable, with a high of 26°C and a low of 21°C, providing a comfortable environment for residents and visitors alike.

Lanzarote is forecasted to have mostly clear skies, with some high cloud cover that will turn slightly cloudier early and late in the day. Light variable winds and sea breezes will dominate the morning hours, but these will strengthen from the southwest later in the day. The weather will remain dry, with warm and pleasant temperatures ranging between 19°C and 29°C, making it an ideal day for outdoor activities.

Fuerteventura will enjoy mainly sunny skies, with thin high cloud and some low cloud over western areas early and late in the day. Winds will start off light and variable, becoming southwesterly and moderate during the afternoon. Temperatures will remain warm, particularly in southern resorts such as Morro Jable and Costa Calma, where highs are expected to reach 27°C and lows will hover around 21°C, providing a perfect setting for beachgoers.

At sea, conditions will vary significantly around the islands. The western islands will experience winds blowing from the west or southwest at force 3 to 5, while the eastern islands will see lighter, variable winds at force 1 to 3. Seas will be slight to moderate in the west and calm to slight in the east, with a north swell of 1 to 2 metres expected throughout the archipelago. This variation in sea conditions may affect boating and water sports, so caution is advised for those planning to engage in maritime activities.
