Major Resurfacing Initiative for Tenerife’s TF-1 Motorway Announced

The Tenerife Cabildo has embarked on a transformative project aimed at revitalizing the TF-1 motorway, a crucial artery connecting Santa Cruz and Arafo. This ambitious undertaking comes with a substantial contract valued at €13.8 million, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing road safety.

Details of the Resurfacing Project

This extensive resurfacing project will span an impressive 18.6 kilometres, specifically targeting the stretch between the 1.4 and 20 kilometre markers. The initiative is expected to take approximately six months to complete, addressing a vital segment of road that accommodates over 70,000 vehicles daily. This high volume of traffic underscores the necessity for timely improvements to ensure safe and efficient travel for all motorists.

Contractor Selection and Financial Efficiency

The resurfacing project has been strategically divided into two sections to optimize execution and resource allocation. The first segment, which stretches from Santa Cruz to El Rosario, has been awarded to Transformaciones y Servicios for a contract amount of €7.5 million. Meanwhile, the second segment, covering El Rosario, Candelaria, and Arafo, will be managed by Señalizaciones Villar at a cost of €6.35 million. The total combined contracts amount to €13,855,850, significantly lower than the initial budget estimate of over €16 million, showcasing effective financial planning and cost management.

Enhancing Safety and Environmental Sustainability

Beyond the essential resurfacing of the roadway, the project will introduce a range of safety enhancements designed to protect motorists and improve overall traffic conditions. Key improvements will include the installation of rumble strips along the edges of the road, which serve as a warning mechanism for drivers veering off course. Additionally, lane markings throughout the motorway and its junctions will be repainted to ensure visibility and clarity.

Moreover, the project will involve renewing both horizontal and vertical road signage, as well as updating information signs along the motorway to provide drivers with the latest travel information. New central reservation safety barriers will be installed to enhance protection for vehicles traveling in both directions. Furthermore, fresh asphalt will be applied to several slip roads and connections to the motorway, ensuring a smooth transition for vehicles entering and exiting the main route.

In a commendable move towards environmental responsibility, the Cabildo has confirmed that the contractors will utilize asphalt mixtures containing 50% recycled materials sourced from existing road surfaces. This approach not only reduces the environmental impact of the project but also promotes sustainability within the construction industry.

Both contracts come with a three-year guarantee on the completed work, ensuring that the quality and durability of the resurfacing meet the highest standards. The initial approval for the resurfacing plan was granted in April, with the tendering process commencing in May. With contracts now officially awarded, construction is anticipated to commence shortly, marking the beginning of a much-needed upgrade to this vital transportation route.
