Storm Claudia to Bring Severe Weather Across Spain

Storm Claudia Set to Unleash Severe Weather Across Spain

Beginning Wednesday, Spain is bracing for the arrival of storm Claudia, which is anticipated to bring a host of severe weather conditions, including strong winds, heavy rainfall, and coastal disturbances. This alarming forecast comes from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which has been closely monitoring the situation.

Areas Most at Risk and Expected Weather Conditions

The storm is predicted to have its most significant impact on the northwest region of the Peninsula, where it may linger for an extended period throughout the week. The Canary Islands are also expected to face sudden surges in water levels in ravines and torrents, raising concerns about local flooding incidents.

Aemet has issued orange level warnings for La Palma on Wednesday, indicating that rainfall could reach an alarming 30 litres per square metre within just one hour. Over a 12-hour period, total rainfall accumulation could reach up to 100 litres. In addition to this, a yellow warning has been declared for storms and winds that may gust up to 80 kilometres per hour in La Palma. Other regions, including El Hierro, La Gomera, and nearly all of Tenerife (with the exception of the northern part), will also be under yellow warnings for storms, winds, and rainfall.

Weather Patterns Leading Up to the Arrival of Claudia

On Tuesday, an Atlantic front is expected to sweep into the northwest of the Peninsula, resulting in predominantly cloudy or overcast skies across the Cantabrian and Atlantic slopes. The southern regions will experience mainly high cloudiness, while the rest of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands will see abundant high cloud cover.

Rainfall is forecasted to be concentrated in western Asturias and Castilla y León, the Central System, northwest Extremadura, and particularly in Galicia, where persistent and occasionally heavy rain is likely to occur. In light of these conditions, Aemet has issued a yellow warning for rainfall in the Galician community, urging residents to remain vigilant.

There is also a chance that rain may extend to other areas of the Cantabrian region, the northern plateau, and the western plateau, depending on how the front evolves. In the Canary Islands, cloudy intervals are expected in the western islands, with the possibility of light rain. Meanwhile, low clouds will be present in the northern part of Gran Canaria, while mostly clear skies are expected in other regions.

Strong gusts of wind are anticipated for Tuesday, particularly from the southeast, which will impact the coasts of Galicia. The state agency has issued warnings about very strong gusts that could affect Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, and Navarra, raising concerns for coastal safety and travel disruptions.

Temperature Trends Throughout the Week

In terms of temperature, a general rise is expected across many regions, although some areas, particularly in the Central System and parts of the eastern facade, may experience slight declines. Minimum temperatures in the Peninsula and Balearic Islands are also projected to increase, although minor drops could occur in certain areas along the Mediterranean slope and in the Canary Islands.

As storm Claudia approaches, residents are advised to prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions. The combination of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential flooding poses significant risks, particularly for those living in vulnerable areas. Local authorities are urging citizens to stay informed through official channels and to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
